As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. But, who has time to write and rewrite multiple drafts of a blog post, article, or web copy. Here are some quick tips to improve your writing now.
1. Be clean and concise
Tight, concise easy-to-read articles and web copy are easier to read versus long and complex articles. Write short and write clearly so you don’t have to waste words explaining what you’ve just written.
2. Keep it short
Keep your line length short. People will better understand what you wrote, understand your message and will read more comfortably when reading shorter lines versus longer lines. Keep your sentences short, and use plenty of paragraph breaks. As a general rule, 45 characters per line is best for reader comfort.
3. Three is the ideal number
Although most people can process seven bits of information at a time, the most compelling number is three. For example, having three bullet points, three strategies, or three steps is considered most effective. Not only will this capture reader interest, but also improve your readers’ ability to remember what you’ve written.
4. Stay on topic
Although it can be hard, try not to stray too far from the main point. If you add in too many points to an article or blog post, readers can get confused about the main point, and miss the point of the article all together.
It helps when writing an article or blog post to create an outline. You can decide on the main point of the piece, and create three sub-points to support it.
