Whether you’re a professional blogger or someone who likes to read blogs and leave comments, basic comment etiquette rules apply when commenting on other people’s blogs. One useful metric for a blog is whether posts generate comments, and the quality of the comments. Here are four tips to keep in mind when commenting on a blog.
1. Be respectful.
Even if you don’t agree with other comments on the page, there is no need to use offensive language. It’s okay to disagree with ideas and people, but you can do this without being disrespectable and name calling. Most bloggers will remove comments that contain offensive language due to its disrespectable nature.
2. Link when appropriate
Adding a link to another site is usually fine as long as it adds to the conversation of the other comments. Putting a link to other sites that aren’t immediately relevant is worst than a distraction and can, in fact, be considered spam and likely be deleted.
3. Think about grammar and style when posting
Make an effort to use good grammar and spelling, and to communicate your thoughts clearly. People cannot respond effectively to your concerns if they cannot understand what you’re trying to say. Also, when writing a lengthy comment, considering using paragraphs instead of having one giant block of words. Long block comments are harder to read and can detract from the overall appeal and understandability of the comment section.
4. Stay on topic
Although it may differ from blog to blog, one general rule if you find yourself in a sidebar discussion with other visitors about something unrelated to the post, offer to email them and continue the dialogue privately. Try to keep the comments relevant to the initial post or blog.
