Facebook Promotions: The Do’s and Don’ts

Running a contest or promotion on Facebook is a great way to generate a buzz, increase engagement on your Fan page, boost your fan count and even build your email list. But, Facebook has strict rules about governing what campaigns you can and cannot administer and promote on Facebook.

A Facebook “Promotion”

According to Facebook:

These Promotions Guidelines govern your communication about or administration of any sweepstakes, contest, competition or other similar offering (each, a “promotion”) on Facebook.

A “sweepstakes” is a promotion that includes a prize and a winner selection on the basis of chance.

A “contest” or “competition” is a promotion that includes a prize and a winner determined on the basis of skill (i.e., through judging based on specific criteria).

Therefore, anytime you run a campaign on facebook where you select a winner, it would fall into the terms of Facebook’s Promotions Guidelines.

Facebook also states:

You will not administer a promotion through Facebook, except through an application on the Facebook Platform Administration that includes operation of any element of the promotion, such as collecting entries, conducting a drawing, judging entries or notifying winners.

Basically: You can’t use Facebook’s features for your promotions

However, there is a way around this! You can still administer a contest on Facebook using a third-party app on the Facebook platform.

A Third-Party App

A popular third-party app used for Facebook contests and promotions is the Wildfire app.  With the Wildfire app, you can chose among 10 different types of promotions including video, photo quiz and more at a very cost-effective price.

So be sure to keep these rules and regulations in mind next time you are thinking about promoting a contest. You do not want Facebook to shut down your popular business or personal page because you violated a regulation!

All you need to remember is that anytime you want to run any kind of promotion or contest where you select a winner, you must use a third-party application on the Facebook platform!
