Here are 5 mistakes to avoid when blogging and writing content.
1. It’s vs. Its
It’s is a contraction of “it is” or “it has.” Its is a possessive pronoun, like “the dog lost its mojo.” And if that is too hard to remember, try this – repeat your sentence out loud using “it is” instead. If it sounds funny, “its” is likely the correct use.
2. Loose vs. Lose
Loose is an adjective meaning the opposite of tight or contained, lose is a verb that refers to loss, or to miss. Here’s a hint.
“If your skirt is too loose, you might lose your skirt.”
3. Your vs. You’re
This is one of the most common mistakes! “Your” is a possessive pronoun, as in “your bike” or “your website.” “You’re” is a contraction for “you are,” as in “you are the best blogger!”
4. There vs. Their vs. They’re
“There” is used many ways, including as a reference to a place “let’s go there” or as a pronoun “there is hope!” “Their” is a plural possessive pronoun, as in “their bags” or “their opinions.” “They’re” is a contraction for “they are,” as in “they are happy with this blog post.”
5. i.e. vs. e.g.
The Latin phrase id est means “that is,” so i.e. is a way of saying “in other words.” It’s designed to make something clearer by saying it in a more common way.
“Future Ranking has the best keyword-rich blog, i.e., a blog that is highly ranked on search engines like Google and Bing.”
The Latin phrase exempli gratia means “for example,” so e. g. is used for giving specific examples that support your assertion.
“Future Ranking has the best keyword-rich blog e.g. because of their low competition keywords, their excellent Marketing department, and years of specialized training.”
With these grammatical tips in mind, your writing will greatly improve and your blog will no longer suffer from grammatical errors.
